I said usb serial connection as that is what I understand the mini usb service connection is. It is clear I should not use an R232 cable as I wouldn't know where to plug it in. By the way I tried three different mini usb cables with exactly the same results or lack thereof.
I had the driver loaded of course otherwise I couldn't select the serial port on Dreamup or Optiflasher. Thansk for pointing me to the driver anyway, but it is the same version I already have. I unistalled mine and reinstalled yours just in case. No change in results :-( unfortunately. I did try a couple of times advanced mode 1 also, but that fails immediately as it cannot find the LAN of course.
So the question remains: Does "Socket error..." refer to the service mini usb connection or the LAN connection? If the latter, why does Optiflasher try to use the LAN even when I select Advanced mode 2?
